The most highly-prized ginseng bears a
likeness to the human form.
Jilin Province ginseng, grown in the
ChangBai Mountain region of China,
bordering Korea, is considered to be
some of the finest cultivated Panax ginseng
in the world.
"Ginseng" was given the botanical name
Panax, from the Greek, meaning "all healing"
(panacea, or pan [all] + akos [cure]). It has
been used from ancient times both by the
Chinese and by Native American herbalists.
Ginseng has been used by human beings
for over four thousand years.
Ginseng seems to keep the mind and body
in balance. Modern research has shown
ginseng to have over 28 therapeutic elements
(ginsenosides). Benefits from the root have
been realized in North America and Europe
only since the 1960s. At this time, there is
research being done about this remarkable
herb.
There are two types of ginseng which are
considered to be the real herb, or root. Panax
ginseng, grown in Asia, has a warming effect
on the body, and is more potent. It is either
white or redwith the red created by steaming,
and then curing, the white ginseng.
The other, Panax Quinquefolius, is grown in
North America. Panax Quinquefolius has a
cooling effect on the body. |
